What We Do: Purl Current Services
Purl has always been a deeply personal, mission-driven resource for prospective adoptive families across the U.S.. Over the years, we’ve refined and shifted our offerings to better meet the needs of families navigating today’s adoption landscape—without losing the heart that has defined us from the beginning.
As of Fall 2025, we’re excited to offer our “Purls of Wisdom Package”, created to educate and support families pursuing domestic infant adoption. Purl now operates as an extension of our founder Katie Zimmerman’s new law firm, Adoption and Family Building Services (AFBS)—allowing us to strengthen our offerings while staying true to our roots.
Eight years ago, Katie laid the groundwork for Purl with her vision, deep legal knowledge, and passion for ethical adoption. While she now focuses on her law practice, she continues to support Purl behind the scenes—ensuring the work she started remains thoughtful, grounded, and aligned with the needs of today’s families and adoptees.
We Are Not Consultants—And Why That Matters
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Purl is not a consultant—and that is intentional. Adoption consultants tend to focus primarily on helping families get matched, and that’s not what we’re here for. That’s what sets Purl apart. We believe the match and placement are only one part of the journey. Yes, being matched and placed with a child is exciting—but adoption is also layered with loss, complexity, and lifelong impact, especially for the child and birth parent(s). Our focus is on preparing prospective adoptive families for what comes before, during, and after the match—so they can show up with empathy, openness, and a clear understanding of what adoption truly entails.
Instead of rushing toward placement, we prioritize education, preparation, and meaningful support, helping families feel confident, informed, and grounded. Because adoption isn’t just about getting a child—it’s about becoming the kind of parent your child will need for years to come.
Taking a Multi-Agency and Attorney Approach
At Purl, we encourage families to take a multi-agency, multi-attorney approach. This strategy gives prospective adoptive parents greater flexibility, broader access to opportunities, and a more empowered role in their adoption journey.
By engaging with more than one agency or attorney at a time, our families are often able to:
- Match more quickly, because they aren’t limited to a single agency’s waiting list or internal process
- Pay less in upfront fees, as they can compare fee structures and avoid putting all their resources into one pathway
- Maintain control and flexibility, choosing professionals who truly align with their family’s needs, values, location, and adoption preferences
Rather than passively waiting, this approach allows families to take a more strategic and proactive role in their adoption journey.
BUT! choosing multiple professionals doesn’t mean choosing blindly. We help families approach this method intentionally, encouraging them to research each agency and attorney thoroughly, even if they come highly recommended by friends or other professionals. This includes evaluating placement rates, total fees, and—most importantly—the level of support and advocacy provided to expectant parents, such as:
- Options counseling
- Separate legal representation
- Case management
- Post-placement counseling and support
We also recommend that families connect with an experienced adoption attorney in their home state, as they’ll likely need one at some point in the process and can be a valuable resource for referrals—or warnings—about local professionals. We particularly suggest looking for attorneys who are members of the Academy of Adoption and Assisted Reproduction Attorneys (AAAA), as this credential reflects experience, vetting, and adherence to high professional standards.
This approach isn’t just about expanding your chances—it’s about being thoughtful, informed, and proactive in a process that often feels overwhelming. It’s one of the many ways we support families in building a solid, informed foundation—not just for placement, but for lifelong adoptive parenting.
